Technical / Fitment
For good performance from the braking system...
- Check that the replacement disc or drum is correct for the make and model of vehicle. Make sure that the spigot hole of the part has the correct diameter to fit the vehicle hub.
- Always fit new discs or drums in pairs. New brake pads should be fitted when replacing brake discs. Use only the highest grade of brake pad from reputable manufacturers.
- Using industrial solvent, thoroughly clean the mating surface between the disc or drum and the hub. Make sure that the hub surface is completely clean and free from rustproof coating, dirt, burrs or indentations. Where the hole on the disc or drum is threaded, the rustproof coating should also be removed from the hole before fitment.
- Examine the caliper to make sure that the pins are not bent and that the sliding half of the caliper moves easily on the pins. Check that the piston moves smoothly all the way back into the caliper and that the brake pads slide in easily. On high mileage vehicles, calipers should be serviced prior to fitting new brake discs.
- Ensure that the wheel bearings are in good condition and properly adjusted.
- Using a dial gauge on the hub front, check that the runout deviation is below 0.03mm.
- Once fitted, tighten the brake disc or drum and wheel nuts to the torque specified in the vehicle workshop manual. To prevent over-torque, avoid use of impact power tools during reassembly.
- Check and replace brake fluid on a regular basis, using the manufacturer-recommended brand.
- Bed in the new discs, drums and friction materials by driving slowly and braking gently for at least 300 kms after fitment.
